Mumbai, 9th October 2025: In a remarkable demonstration of coordination, expertise, and compassion, cardiac specialists at Fortis Hospital, Mulund successfully performed a heart transplant on a 58-year-old ex-Indian Army serviceman from Ahmednagar, giving him a new lease on life. The surgery, performed on Oct 8th 2025, was led by Dr. Satish Javali, Senior Consultant – CardioThoracic Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Mulund and his multidisciplinary transplant team. This milestone marks Mumbai’s 42nd organ donation and 15th heart transplant of 2025, reaffirming the city’s growing culture of organ donation and the collective effort of healthcare institutions, Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), Mumbai, civil departments, and donor families.

The recipient, was diagnosed with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction in October 2023. Despite multiple treatment efforts, his condition deteriorated, and he was listed for transplant on April 2024. The consent for donation was given by the donor’s mother, brother, and sister-in-law. The donor heart was transported from a city hospital to Fortis Mulund through a green corridor in just 28 minutes, ensuring the organ’s viability and timely transplantation.

Commenting on the successful transplant, Dr. Vishal Beri, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, said, “This successful transplant underscores the power of collaboration — between hospitals, Traffic personnel, and above all, the donor’s family who made an extraordinary decision during their time of grief. The availability of a suitable & matching donor heart and the efficient green corridor were crucial to the success of this lifesaving transplant. Post-surgery, the patient is stable and under close monitoring in the Cardiac ICU. The road to recovery will be gradual, but the outcome has been very encouraging.”
